This bust was commissioned by George Selwyn (1710-91) to commemorate a visit by King Chrales I (1600-49) to his house in 1643. Selqyn bequethed the bust to Maria Fagnani, who later became Marchioness of Hertford, in the (mistaken) belief that she was his daughter.
