This relief has been scanned in the Cathedral of Catania, Sicily. It is part of Bellini's tombstone decorations. Vincenzo Salvatore Carmelo Francesco Bellini was a Sicilian opera composer, who was known for his long-flowing melodic lines for which he was named "the Swan of Catania". After his initial success in Naples, most of the rest of his short life was spent outside of both Sicily and Naples, those years being followed with his living and composing in Milan and Northern Italy, and—after a visit to London—then came his final masterpiece in Paris, I puritani. Composer. His operas "Norma" (1831) and "La Sonnambula" (1831) are outstanding works of the Italian "bel canto" style. The title role of "Norma" is considered the most difficult in the soprano repertoire. His music had a profound influence on Giuseppe Verdi. Originally interred at Pere Lachaise in Paris, his remains were transferred to his birthplace of Catania in 1876.
