This bust of an apostle comes from the decoration of an altarpiece of the Saint-Etienne cathedral of Toulouse. A double portico surmounted by a baldachin was adorned with multiple life-size sculptures, dedicated to the themes of death (the Dormition) and the Assumption of the Virgin. A drawing by Bénazet (1791) in the Musée du Vieux-Toulouse shows us the original arrangements. According to a market passed in 1532, this altarpiece "in the antique" would be the work of Nicolas Bachelier. This bust, probably that of an apostle mourning the death of the Virgin, would be one of the few remains of this prestigious ensemble destroyed in 1794.
