The marble statue from which Antonio Canova's studio made this cast was found near Rome in 1780, where it joined the Vatican collection (where it remains). The identity of this divinity has never been perfectly ascertained, but his grace and youth have indicated to many that it is indeed Adonis, the beloved of Aphrodite. Made c.1816, this cast was subsequently fitted with a 'modesty covering'. The fig-leaf was removed during conservation work in 2019 and has been retained as an archival object.
