Charles Guméry was a French sculptor working in an academic realist manner in Paris. In 1850 Gumery won the prestigious Prix de Rome for his sculpture 'Achilles Wounded in the Heel by Paris'. The statue depicts Achilles turning sideways to inspect the wound in his heel delivered by Paris's arrow. Gumery shows his subject as nonchalantly inspecting his wound, even though it will eventually kill him. The original plaster of Achilles Wounded is at the Académie des Beaux-Arts in Paris.
