Johann August von Beyer (1730-1814), the man portrayed, was a German official and poet. The artist, Gottfried Schadow (1764-1850), was a German sculptor, regarded as the founder of the modern Berlin school of sculptors, most well known for the “Quadriga of Victory” (1793), a statue of a chariot drawn by four horses, atop the Brandenburg Gate.
